WellMet 2050 - Prolonging our metal life

Year:
2011

Prolonging our metal lifeSteel and aluminium products are discarded due to wear, breakage or obsolescence of function or style, but often the definition of end of life is subjective and opportunities exist to carry on using the product with additional upgrades or maintenance. Additionally, during the lifetime of the products there are periods when they are not fully utilised.

Can we use products more effectively?

WellMet2050 investigated novel methods of meeting global carbon emissions targets for steel and aluminium that go beyond improving process efficiency by reconsidering the entire product lifecycle. Based in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, the five–year project was backed by £1.5m of government funding through the EPSRC Leadership Fellowship scheme and a consortium of more than twenty companies, partner universities and leading academics.
