Discussions on global warming and metal production suffer from a disconnect between environmental systems analysis, which is technologically vague, and materials innovations that cannot scale sufficiently to have meaningful impact. This theme issue aims to nucleate a new research community focused on scalable solutions that allow the global metals system to function with zero emissions by 2050.
